Director: Andrey Selivanov

Country: Russian Federation

Duration: 29:51

Synopsis: On the bank of a river, in Siberia, the exiles are talking. One of them, a young Tatar, says about his house on the main land and dreams about his wife’s coming to him to Siberia. Semyon , who’s been staying in Siberia for 22 years, the carrier on the river, convinces him that the only way to be happy here is to stop dreaming. As an example Semion tells the story of a Gentleman, a Barin, from St. Petersburg, exiled to Siberia for a settlement. He also has been dreaming and used to say: “even in Siberia people can live good, even in Siberia happiness happens.” The Barin was happy when a young wife and little daughter came to Siberia for him. But she did not stay long with him, did not want to bury her beauty and youth in Siberia, and fled with one of the officials to St. Petersburg. For a long time the Barin had suffered, but in fact Semyon warned him from the very beginning: “do not dream, you will first want a family, then something else ..”. The Barin wished to get amnesty and come back to St Petersburg for his wife. About 8 years he had been straggling, turned gray, hunched, became quite sick .. But didn’t achieved anything. Then he “had found a new amusement” – his daughter had grown up. And again the Barin became happy, and again Semyon warned him … His daughter had got tuberculosis. Again, the Barin suffers. All the money has been spent on doctors, and the daughter couldn’t be cured. At night the Tatar sees a dream: his wife came to him and called him home. The Tatar can not follow his beloved, because the path lies across the river, and the Tatar does not know how to swim. The next morning Tatar helps Semyon to transport the Barin to the other shore, for a trip to the next doctor. He is very sympathetic to Barin. A little later, the Tatar and Semyon have an emotional dispute. The Tatar does not agree with how Semyon takes life. He says that “… God created man to be alive, so that there was a joy, a yearning and a grief …” God loves people, and Semyon, who feels nothing, wish nothing – he is not a human, but a stone, and that God does not love. Completely desperate, Tatar steals the boat and floats away towards his dream.
