Low birth rates, high death rates, and emigration have pushed many villages to the verge of extinction. Altimir explores life in one of Bulgaria’s disappearing villages haunted by the promises of communism and capitalism.

The idyllic dream of motherhood is shattered and replaced by the reality of a crying baby. She seeks support and comfort from a group of far more experienced mothers, whom tries to help Pernille the best way they can. But how can one become a great mother?

The farmer is a gawky fellow, drunk on homemade cider, and deeply unhappy. The apple trees are rotten and

the apples full of worms. He is bankrupt, desperate and loathed upon by his heartless brother.
