What is the first story you ever wrote?
A novel ‘The Corpse Flower’ – a thriller set in New York City and Isfahan, Iran.
Growing up, what movies or stories inspired your creative passion?
Carradine in ‘Kung Fu’, stories of searching for identity, adventure novels, any novel written in the English language, theatrical plays, James Bond (no choice).
For an unknown writer, what is the best way to get their screenplay seen?
Find actors who want to read scripts – the serious actors always do – arrange table reads and invite ANYONE in industry. Even if they don’t come, and they usually don’t, they’ll get to know your name if you’re persistent.
What experiences from your life influence your characters?
Pretty much everything, but also look at the world and beyond. It’s awful and amazing all at once, depending on where you look.
Can you explain your character development process?
A protagonist with a problem, the deeper and more complex and potentially harrowing the better.
Do you write bios before you start writing?
Yes, a general idea of the central character(s) but this can shift / evolve once the initial story is mapped out and the writing starts in earnest.
How emotionally involved are you with the characters you create?
I spend a lot of time with them in my head. It’s bound to get emotional. Can’t shake that.
What are your thoughts on structure?
Know where you’re going, even if you think you’re a genius and can wing it. You’ll save yourself years.
Do you outline before you start writing?
I do now, because I’m not a genius and I prefer to save years.
What is the most important aspect of building a great character?
Someone you want to stay with and keep going back to, whether you love them or loathe them. Can’t be somewhere in the middle.
